Learning Languages

The main thrust of “investigating languages” is to develop an appreciation and awareness of a variety of languages. Nevertheless there might be occasions when teachers might wish to explore an individual language in greater depth.

The following three sites offer opportunities to develop ones knowledge of a language across a range of languages:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/

http://www.tandemcity.com/

Although this offers a fantastic opportunity to build language learning partnerships with native speakers from other countries, learners are advised to approach with caution as it is free for anybody to enrol.

Usborne Books gives you the opportunity to hear a wide variety of words and phrases pronounced by native speakers, as well as a range of quizzes, activities, worksheets and more, to teach various languages, through their Quicklinks website. Whilst it is possible to make good use of the Quicklinks website alone, you can find out about the books that the website accompanies from your local Usborne Books at Home and School representative.

The following sites introduce specific languages:

Arabic
Chinese
German
Greek
Hindi
Japanese
Panjabi
Russian
Swahili
